How to Attract Gen X Employees

Gen X is often the most overlooked generation in the workforce despite being one of the most dependable and experienced. Born between 1965 and 1980, they have built careers through economic changes, technological shifts and evolving workplace cultures. Today they occupy many of the most influential operational and leadership roles which makes attracting and retaining them essential for long term business success.

At Westray Recruitment Group we recently carried out research into how each generation views the workplace including what Gen X professionals value most. These insights provide clear direction for businesses who want to build stronger, more committed teams.

What Gen X Wants from an Employer

According to our research Gen X consistently look for three core elements when choosing where to work.

1. Strong Company Ethics and Trustworthy Leadership

Gen X place high importance on working for an organisation that operates responsibly. They want employers who are transparent in their practices and who treat people fairly. Ethical leadership is seen as a sign of long term stability which is something this generation highly values.

2. Competitive Salary and Long Term Job Security

While every generation appreciates competitive pay Gen X workers particularly value financial stability. Many are supporting families, managing mortgages or preparing for the later stages of their careers. A secure job combined with a fair salary is one of the biggest attractors.

3. A Positive Workplace Culture

Gen X professionals thrive in environments where teamwork and camaraderie are strong. One respondent explained "I'd rather be in a shit job with good people than in a good job with shit people” which emphasises the importance of culture. They want to feel valued and treated as individuals rather than numbers.

Their Preferred Way of Working

Gen X place value on clear routines and practical structures.

Key preferences include:

  • Shorter commutes
  • Predictable working hours
  • A strong team culture

67% of Gen X respondents said they preferred team based roles which shows how important collaboration is to this generation.

What Helps Gen X Perform at Their Best

Gen X want to feel supported without being micromanaged. The research shows they value:

  • Easy access to HR for guidance
  • Clear communication
  • A stable workplace culture that feels positive and inclusive

They perform best when expectations are clear and when they are trusted to deliver.

What Keeps Them in a Role

Our findings show that Gen X employees stay because of:

  • Enjoyment of the job
  • Strong culture
  • Feeling valued

One participant highlighted the importance of meaningful recognition noting that nobody wants to feel like “just a number”. When Gen X feel valued they show high levels of loyalty which makes them one of the most stable talent groups in the workforce.

Why They Leave

The biggest factors influencing Gen X to leave are:

  • Poor workplace culture
  • Lack of work life balance
  • Weak leadership
  • Low enjoyment of the role

Interestingly more than one in four Gen X professionals stated that nothing would influence them to leave their current role which reflects their strong sense of loyalty when treated well.

How to Attract Gen X Employees

Based on our research employers will have the most success attracting Gen X talent by focusing on the following areas.

1. Showcase Long Term Stability

Gen X want reassurance that your business provides security. Demonstrate your track record of growth and commitment to ethical practices. Make stability a central part of your employer brand.

2. Promote Your Workplace Culture

This generation care deeply about the people they work alongside. Share real evidence of your team culture, employee stories and examples of how you support collaboration and respect within the workforce.

3. Provide Clear Expectations and Autonomy

Gen X employees are highly experienced and self reliant. They want clarity around objectives but the freedom to do their jobs without unnecessary oversight.

4. Offer Career Routes That Respect Experience

Many Gen X workers still want development opportunities. Whether this is through leadership responsibilities mentoring roles or focused upskilling you can attract them by demonstrating that experience will be recognised and rewarded.

5. Support Work Life Balance

Flexible working is not just a priority for younger generations. Gen X appreciate arrangements that allow them to manage personal responsibilities alongside their career.
