Job Description: FLT Operative

Company: Westray RecruitmentLocation: BillinghamContract: Temporary to Permanent

Pay Rates

  • £14.38 per hour for rotating shifts
  • £14.84 per hour for continental shifts
  • Overtime currently available, paid at time and one-third

About the Role

Westray Recruitment is recruiting experienced FLT Operatives to join a busy warehouse and logistics operation in Billingham.

These temporary-to-permanent opportunities require candidates with a valid, externally accredited Counterbalance FLT licence. Successful candidates will support warehouse operations through the safe movement of stock, loading and unloading, pallet handling, order preparation and general operational duties.

Depending on the department and shift pattern, the work may range from straightforward FLT and handheld-scanner duties to more physically demanding tasks involving manual handling and the operation of specialist machinery.

The employer places considerable importance on training, experience, safety and staff retention. All applicants will attend a meet-and-greet interview before starting, and full, honest CVs are required.

Shift Patterns

Two shift options are available:

Option 1: Weekly Rotating Shifts

Monday to Friday, rotating weekly:

  • 06:00 to 14:00
  • 14:00 to 22:00
  • Pay rate: £14.38 per hour

This area of the operation involves heavier manual work and the use of specialist machinery. New starters will learn the machinery, processes and warehouse layout before progressing to regular FLT duties. The environment can be congested, so strong safety awareness is essential.

Option 2: Continental Shift Pattern

  • 06:00 to 18:00
  • Continental shift pattern, including weekend working
  • Pay rate: £14.84 per hour

This area primarily involves operating a Counterbalance FLT, using handheld scanners and carrying out general pallet-handling duties.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Operating a Counterbalance FLT safely and efficiently
  • Loading and unloading vehicles and containers
  • Moving, stacking and storing pallets within the warehouse
  • Using handheld scanners to record stock movements
  • Supporting goods-in and goods-out operations
  • Checking stock and reporting discrepancies
  • Preparing goods and pallets for dispatch
  • Completing general palletising duties
  • Learning and operating specialist machinery where required
  • Carrying out manual handling and general warehouse duties
  • Working safely within busy and potentially congested areas
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and organised workplace
  • Following all site procedures and health and safety requirements
  • Supporting the wider warehouse operation when required

Essential Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A valid and in-date Counterbalance FLT licence
  • An externally accredited qualification issued by RTITB, ITSSAR or NPORS
  • Previous FLT and warehouse experience
  • Experience working safely in a busy operational environment
  • Good attention to detail
  • A reliable and responsible approach to work
  • A willingness to complete manual handling and general warehouse duties
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • A full and honest CV outlining their employment history

Please note that in-house or expired FLT licences cannot be accepted for these positions.

A driving licence would be advantageous.

PPE Requirements

Operatives will be required to wear approved PPE, including:

  • Safety boots
  • Orange high-visibility clothing
  • Bump cap

  • Temporary-to-permanent employment
  • Competitive hourly pay
  • Overtime currently available at time and one-third
